Shri Kaal Bhairav

The worship of the eight Bhairavas is a part of Saivite tradition, and the chief among them is Kala Bhairava. The Kal Bhairava temple in Ujjain, is believed to have been built by King Bhadrasen, on the banks of the Shipra. Mentioned in the Avanti Khanda of the Skanda Purana.

Kaal Bhairav temple enshrines the awe-inspiring idol of Bhairav to whom liquor is offered. To the utter astonishment of the viewer the plate of liquor becomes empty. This is because its deity Kaal Bhairav guzzles wine by the gallons. The remaining liquor in the bottle is returned to the devotee as prasad. Yes, the main offering to the deity is liquor, and this is also the only Prasad given to the devotees. People flock to this temple, all carrying bottles of liquor as an offering. Liquor is available 365 days a year outside the temple.

Black Dog at the gate of Bhairav Mandir Kal Bhairava’s vehicle is a black dog, and therefore there is an idol of a Black Dog at the gate of the Bhairav Mandir. Black dogs specifically are supposed as the form of Bhairava. The devotion to Lord Bhairav can be shown by feeding and taking care of dogs every Saturday. All problems will be sorted by doing this simple act.

Lord Bhairav is also called “kotwal” for guarding the Lord Shiva temple. The worship of Lord Bhairav will grant his follower triumph over rivals, worldly comforts and success.

Kaal Bhairav Jayanti, also known as Maha Kala Bhairava Jayanthi or Kala Bhairava Ashtami, is believed to be the appearance day of Lord Kaal Bhairav, the fierce form of Lord Shiva. Kaal Bhairav Jayanti 2012 celebrates on December 06. It is celebrated on the eighth day after Kartik Purnima.

Personal Visit

I had the great fortune and blessings to visit the Kal Bhairava temple in Ujjain, on the 20th and 21st April 2011. I offered the prasad of liquor to Lord Kal Bhairava, and these photos were personally taken by me on this occasion. The feeling of love of Lord Kal Bhairava overwhelmed me when I was praying inside this temple.

A few meters away from The Kal Bhairava temple is the Vikrant Bhairav Temple.

There is no information as to who built this temple, but Rani Ahilyabai of Indore renovated it. What is known is that Baba Dabral discovered it in the year 1960.

According to Hindu mythology, Bhairav is the fifth incarnation to Mahakal who is Lord Shiva Himself. Vikrant Bhairavj in one of the Ashta (eight) Bhariravjis who according to skanda purana lives in Ujjain. The second among them is Vikrant Bhairavji.

Skandapurana relates in the ‘Awantya khanda’ under Bhairav Tirtha that Bhairav lies at the northern bank of the shipra river, his temple is located abreast a crematorium called Aukhaleshwar which means a place where the dead have no rebirth after cremation, i.e. they attain salvation or Nirvana

Personal Visit

After visiting the Kal Bhairava temple in Ujjain, on the 20th and 21st April 2011, I also visited the Shri Vikrant Bhairav temple, which are a few meters away. I took these photos on this occasion. Although this temple is not as well known as the Kal Bhairava Temple, Ujjain, it is also very powerful.

I found this temple very serene and calm, and I was very happy that I could visit this temple.

There is a Black Dog idol at the gate of this temple as in all Bhairav Temples. I have shown the photos of the idol of the Black Dog from different angles, also shown for the first time the detailed photos of the VIKRANT BHAIRAV idol.

Lord VIKRANT BHAIRAV JI IS THE OCEAN OF MERCY FOR ALL HIS DEVOTEES.

Folklore has it that Bhim, one of the Pandavas carried Bhairava on his shoulders to the present location of the temple to stop demons from interrupting the Yagna (Holy fire).
